Twenty companies are the source of more than half of all single-use plastic thrown away globally. One of them is Formosa Plastics. Formosa Plastics is a Taiwanese company that operates in a variety of industries, including petrochemicals, plastics, and fiber production. The company has been the subject of controversy for several reasons, including environmental issues. Formosa Plastics has been accused of causing significant environmental damage in several countries where it operates, including Taiwan, the United States, and Vietnam. In Vietnam, for example, a Formosa Plastics subsidiary was responsible for a toxic chemical spill in 2016 that caused widespread fish deaths and affected the livelihoods of many local fishermen. In 2019, two activists were faced with the threat of 15 years in prison for "terrorism". This consisted of collecting little plastic pellets called nurdles that Formosa dumped on the coast of Texas and mailing them to a lobbyist.
